Cyril Bartlett

CYRIL GEORGE BARTLETT, A VOLUNTEER SOLDIER OF THE 1ST/4TH ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGIMENT, WHO SERVED IN FRANCE AND ITALY DURING THE GREAT WAR FROM SEPTEMBER 1914 TO MAY 1919.

This website has been created by Chris Bartlett grandson of Cyril Bartlett in his memory.

The book Poppa's Papers by Liz Bartlett
When he died in 1979 Cyril left behind a collection of documents, medals and other materials that were collected together by his eldest son Dennis and became known in the familiy as Poppa's Papers. Years later my mother, Liz, began drawing these papers up, together with historical data from the war years, to construct a coherent story: now published as the book Poppa's Papers (click the image to the left to see how to obtain a copy). As she did so, we realised that Cyril had been an even more remarkable man than we had known when he was alive.

As many members of the family live outside the UK and the extended family are distributed across the world, it seemed to me worthwhile to build a website to enable anyone who is interested to look at the materials and read his story.

That is what this site is all about - telling Poppa's story - there may perhaps be a wider historical interest as well, but we are doing it because we are proud of him and want his memory to be secured for the future.

Producing the website has also provided me with the impetus to write down a story I heard from him as a child, which never made it into the papers, though a crucial piece of evidence - the daffodil - was preserved.
